Purcellville, Va. — After carrying a 15-point lead into the half and a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter, the Loudoun Valley High School girls basketball team had its hands full with a rejuvenated Broad Run High School team that hit a pair of threes and shot 80% from the free throw line in fourth quarter to cut the lead to just four.

Luckily, for the Vikings, they had created enough cushion early on and got some late insurance from freshman point guard Alyssa Tribino to be able to fend off the Spartans, 49-45, on January 9 in Purcellville.

Loudoun Valley jumped out to an early first quarter lead thanks to their core group of freshmen, who finished with 44 of the Vikings’ 49 points. Led by Tribino, the Vikings also got healthy contributions from freshman guard Anna Ramos and freshmen forwards Payton Mandichak and Maggie Mills.

Down the stretch, the Vikings also got crucial minutes from freshmen forwards Ella McCrory and Emma Sabin, who replaced Mills and junior forward Alex Phillips after they fouled out.

Tribino finished with a game-high 20 points, including two layups in the fourth quarter that helped keep the Spartans at arm’s length. The freshman phenom also added 8 rebounds and 5 steals.

The Spartans also leaned heavily on their youth as freshman guard Sienna Bhide finished with 13 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 steals. Sophomore forward Claire Erny finished with 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals, while junior forward Alex Gonzalez chipped in 7 points, including her one and only three-pointer of the night while the Spartans made their run in the fourth quarter.

Despite the late surge by the Spartans, Tribino and co. were able to battle through the run and get Loudoun Valley back in the win column while getting over the .500 mark in the Dulles District.

Loudoun Valley (3-2, 4-6) will look to earn another district win when they travel to Lightridge on January 11. Broad Run (4-2, 5-5) will look to bounce back when the Spartans host non-district Stone Bridge on January 11.
