Loudoun County, Va. – In an effort to better recognize student-athletes who positively affect high school sports in Loudoun County, Gymnaze and LoCoSports have teamed up to announce Dominion High School senior Ashlyn Hickey as the Gymnaze and LoCoSports Athlete of the Month for May 2022.
During the month of May, Hickey won 86-percent of her draw controls while adding 16 goals and 17 assists as the Titans posted a 6-0 record in that stretch. She also leads the team in ground balls (35) and has already set a program record for turnovers caused in a season (29).
“When you can make something really hard look effortless, you know you have a truly talented athlete. Ashlyn excels in all parts of the game with a very high lacrosse IQ,” Dominion head coach Diane Traynor said. “She took (and won) the majority of the draws for us this year which leads to possession of the ball, which is absolutely key in giving your team the best chance to win games.”
While going 6-0 is impressive enough, the Villanova-commit helped the Titans outscore opponents by an astounding 19-1 during the month of May.
“Defensively, she can stop ball, cause turnovers, and read the attack very well,” Traynor said. “And, on attack, she is our main ball handler and really settles the team down. She is able to get free in the 8-meter and take quality shots, being very strong with both right and left hands. Truly, an all-around lacrosse player who can respond to whatever circumstances she is given.”
But what makes a really good lacrosse player into a great lacrosse player is the ability to humbly lead her team into battle which is exactly what Hickey has done since the moment she stepped foot on campus.
“Ashlyn is not only a natural-born athlete, she is also a natural team leader,” Traynor said. “Her love of the game and being part of a team—along with her sense of humor—impacts everyone on the team. She challenges everyone to be the best they can be and believe in themselves. She is never about herself or her own stats and is willing to let others shine.”
The Gymnaze and LoCoSports Athlete of the Month is selected from nominations based on student-athletes having great success, hustle, work ethic, attitude and heart.
