Golf: Heritage Junior Hayden Miller Named August 2017 Athlete of the Month

Loudoun County, Va. – In an effort to better recognize student-athletes who positively affect high school sports in Loudoun County, Power Train and LoCoSports have teamed up to announce Heritage High School junior Hayden Miller as the Power Train and LoCoSports Athlete of the Month for August 2017.

In his first tournament of the season, Miller shot a low round 69 to lead the Pride to the Curly Licklider Invitational on August 2. Then two weeks later, Miller once again shot the low round – this time a 6-under, 66 – to lead Heritage to the 2017 Loudoun County Public Schools Championship.

“Any good golfer has to dedicate himself to long hours at the range and on the course, but one additional aspect of Hayden’s game is that he continually challenges himself by competing in tournaments that test his level of ability and match him against players who are the best in the region,” Heritage head coach Ken Schiffer said. “This improves his game and his ability to handle the stress and anxiety that competition brings. Hayden also has that winning drive and fire which keep him in the game even if he has a bad shot or a bad hole.”

After winning the Conference 21B and VHSL 4A West region championships in 2016 – where Miller shot 78 and 74, respectively – Miller hopes to lead Heritage back to the VHSL 4A State tournament this fall, where they finished runners up in 2016.

“He is totally focused on the match or tournament at hand, and he continually checks with his teammates to see how they are doing and to encourage them,” Schiffer said. “He has a practice ethic that is hard to match, and one River Creek Golf Club member jokingly mentioned (unsolicited by me) that he thought Hayden lived at the range and course he was there so much. The other team members see how hard Hayden works, and they are motivated to follow his example.”

The Power Train and LoCoSports Athlete of the Month is selected from nominations based on student-athletes having great success, hustle, work ethic, attitude and heart.

Power Train invites all athletes and teammates of the month to either of their Loudoun locations for a free month of training.
