Purcellville (February 15, 2017) — Woodgrove High School senior Aaron Fitzwater has committed to continue his football career at Division II West Virginia State University starting in the 2017-18 school year.
“It’s been a dream of mine ever since I was a young kid to play in college, so it feels great to be committed,” Fitzwater said. “ The recruiting process has been a lot of fun but very time consuming and I’m ready to get to work as a yellow jacket.”
Fitzwater decided on WSVU because of location but also the players and coaches themselves.
“I chose West Virginia State because I felt it was a good fit for me, from the coaching staff, to the location to the players I could relate to.”
From his backyard in Nearsville, Virgina to the Woodgrove High School stadium field, Aaron has been playing since he was a kid.
“I’ve been playing football ever since I can remember,” said Fitzwater. “I played in Brunswick, Maryland because it was closer than going all the way to Purcellville, and that’s where I learned to play with passion. A lot of games would have 13-15 players so you played the whole game no matter what. I believe that built a foundation in me to never quit and to keep getting up no matter how many times you get knocked down.”
Fitzwater is an all-Conference 21A first team, VHSL 4A West all-region second team and Cheers and LoCoSports All-LoCo honorable mention defensive end.
In 2016, Woodgrove advanced as far as a VHSL 4A West region semifinal, where they fell to Dominion High School, 30-23, ending their season at 11-1.
“I would not trade my experience playing for Woodgrove for anything,” Fitzwater said. “I believe coach Skinner is the best coach in Virginia. He taught us to be on time, to be a good person and how to have a great work ethic.”
After having been taught great work ethic by coach Skinner, Fitzwater thinks he will bring a lot to this Division II school.
“I believe I’ll add a good work ethic and be a good persona on and off the field for the Yellow Jacket team.”
The 6-foot-4 defensive end is excited to excel from Woodgrove and continue his football career as a West Virginia State.
